Rhinoplasty Patient Diary

July 27th, 2011

After what seemed like just a few seconds I was cozy in the recovery room with nice, cold compresses over my eyes and vaseline on my lips (compliments of Coreen, Dr. Pearlman’s trusty nurse/scrub technician – they have been working together for years.) Love her! I was in the recovery room for a little over an hour with no pain and no nausea. This was an incredible relief, as every patient reacts differently to anesthesia. But, I’m no fool – I wanted to get home sooner than later because I knew the discomfort would eventually kick in…I wanted to eat something, take my oral pain medications and sleep. I walked perfectly fine (although I was just a little drowsy which was to be expected.) As always, Dr. Pearlman offered personalized service like limousine and car rental services to and from the office, recovery accommodations at a local NYC hotel and the opportunity to schedule a visit to the hotel or my house from one of our nurses. Although I didn’t need the accommodations, knowing I had these options was relieving.

And so the recovery process begins…

The day has come and excitement has transformed into fear. Not the bad fear, the unexpected kind. The one where you don’t know what is coming, so you fear the worst but are confident it’s the right move. As I was in the OR, and they were getting ready to put in my IV, this is when my nerved kicked into full gear – as this was my first time getting general anesthesia. However, I was made as comfortable as possible, reassured that everything would be just fine. So I sat back, listened to the music of my choice and prepared myself. Dr. Pearlman stood next to me and chatted, while Dr. Moreno placed the IV and I barely even noticed the little prick (and that is huge coming from someone who hates needles!) It was like just another day at the office, although for once I was in the chair! Dr. Pearlman started with the joke telling- something he’s known for- and since I had started to get relaxing medications in my IV, I was chuckling at him. You could say it was comparable to being at a comedy club with a couple of very strong drinks in you! Dr. Morneno advised me that I was going to go sleep and moments later, I was out.

The date is finally confirmed, reality is setting in and maybe the nerves are finally starting to work their way into the equation. Although, I have the utmost confidence in my decision to move forth with this, I can’t help but wonder what I will look like after. A little swelling and bruising post surgery will come and go, just as I have seen so many times before. But, when the swelling goes down and bruising clears up, I will be faced with the situation that even 1,000 patients who have gotten this procedure done in front of me couldn’t prepare me for. I will have my first personal encounter with my new nose, and I’m the only person who can formulate my opinion on how I look…

I’m not nervous at all, at least not yet – just beyond excited. During my consultation with Dr. Pearlman, he listened to what I was looking for and with his 24 years of surgical experience and all the fantastic results I have seen with my own eyes, I have the utmost confidence in him and Dr. Moreno (his Anesthesiologist.) They were confident and made me feel comfortable about making this big decision. Also, I trust Dr. Pearlman’s expertise with Rhinoplasty and am relieved to begin this journey.

I have disliked my nose since I was a teenager and now, at 27, my dream of getting it fixed finally came! I have worked with Dr. Pearlman for over a year now and as time went on, and the number of patients with outstanding rhinoplasty results grew, so did my longing for my own perfect nose. Day after day patients fluctuate in and out of our office, and day after day my desire grows. What was once something I thought I could never fix – is finally within my reach. I am planning my consultation for the near future, and looking forward to making this dream a reality.

Hello All!

My name is Christine, I am Dr. Pearlman’s nurse. I recently booked my Rhinoplasty with Dr. Pearlman and wanted to use this opportunity to publicly document my experience getting the surgery. I’d like to use this discussion to reminisce and bring you all through my experience from start to finish. Feel free to ask me questions and talk with me, as I will be updating this discussion as often as possible!

Looking forward to this!
