Health and Skin Benefits of Brussels Sprouts

October 23rd, 2012

Eating healthy is the best way to achieve a better body, health and skin. A proper diet also ensures that you always feel and look your best. Incorporating super foods, like brussels sprouts, into your diet will offer amazing health and skincare benefits. On a personal note, if you think you don’t like brussel sprouts, try them again. Up until a year ago I hadn’t touched them since I was a kid. I had dinner at my brother’s house and my sister in law teaches cooking. I tried the brussel sprouts and they were great. Now I even cook them myself!

Brussels sprouts provide high levels of Vitamin C, sulforaphane and antioxidants. When these key elements are combined, they protect the body against viral infections and cancer. The high concentration of Vitamin C also supports collagen production, creating better skin elasticity for a more youthful appearance.

Incorporating brussels sprouts in to your diet is one of many ways you can help take better care of your body, inside and out.

Considering a Brow Lift? Here’s what you need to know…

October 21st, 2012

Perhaps you look tired, even when you aren’t, or maybe the aging process has caused unsightly sagging skin or the dreaded under-eye bags. No matter your reasons for considering a browlift, it’s important to know about the options available , steps your plastic surgeon will take, and the recovery period.

If cosmetic surgery is the way to go, talk to your cosmetic surgeon to learn more about your options and if you’re a good candidate for browlift. Your surgeon will explain the process and recovery to you.

Before your browlift procedure begins, your surgeon will study your facial structure, as different people exhibit slightly differing contours.

During the procedure, your surgeon will make incisions into the skin of your forehead to pull it into a more taught position. Dr. Pearlman feels that the endoscopic browlift is the best and least invasive for most patients.

After the typical brow enhancement procedure, there will be an approximate 2 week healing period during which time swelling and overall discomfort will diminish and surrounding skin in the brow area will begin to take on a smoother appearance. The result? More youthful looking skin and eyes and an appearance of energy and vitality over fatigue.

A browlift is a permanent and proven method to look more youthful and has been proven safe time and again. Talk to and interview local cosmetic surgeons to learn more about this procedure and if it’s right for you.

Sometimes, even Botox can do the trick. By relaxing the muscles that pulls the brow down, some patients can get results that may be akin to a browlift.

What is a ‘Non-Surgical Facelift’?

October 18th, 2012

Your face often is the first to tell your story. It shows if your life has been one of happiness or sadness, stress or relaxation. It tells how old you are, if you’ve spent your time outdoors or indoors and a slew of other stories about your life. While we all agree that telling our stories can be enjoyable, not all of us want it written all over our faces.

As you age, you may notice these changes to your face that you’d rather not have:

  • Fat loss in the face
  • Body fat is the substance that gives your face a youthful appearance. Adults that have lost facial volume will have a hollow appearance under the eyes, on the cheeks and through the lips. This will make you look much older than you are — or want to — look.

  • Facial sun damage
  • Repeated exposure to sun over the years causes less elasticity in the skin fibers. Fine wrinkles often appear as you age, and your skin is often referred to as leathery. If you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun, went tanning a lot when you were younger, or just forgot to wear your sunscreen, you may begin noticing this unsightly change to your skin’s appearance.

  • Extra hanging skin
  • The loss of elasticity due to less collagen production in the aging body often affects your eyebrows and neck. It can also cause the phenomenon commonly referred to as jowls along the jawline.

Although you may wish to ease these effects of aging, you may also be reluctant to go through surgery. Fortunately, there are newer technologies available which provide a facelift while eliminating the need for surgery.

    Fat Injections and Fillers
Though you may have joked about it, a fat transplant really is possible! Plastic surgeons are able to inject fat from your abodomen below the facial skin and plump up the areas that have become hollowed out. However, with all the fabulous new facial fillers we now have, Dr. Pearlman is finding less and less of a need for fat transfer. Why not take something off the shelf that lasts close to a year instead of an invasive fat transfer that requires time off and healing?

A liquid facelift product called Sculptra is also used as an injection to fill in sagging areas. It helps the body create its own collagen with no scarring or negative lasting effects.

Although not technically a filler, Botox relaxes facial muscles. It is best if you have fine wrinkle lines such as those caused by sun damage.

    Facial Rejuvenation
The popular product available to stimulate your own body’s collagen production is Thermage. This is a helpful procedure if you have lost elasticity in the face. It applies heat therapy, and the procedure typically only takes an hour. The results are very minor. Another new promising technology is Ulthera. Still, the jury is out. Dr. Pearlman is waiting for long term studies before he submits his patients to this procedure.

    Laser Skin Tightening
The use of lasers has proven successful in everything from correcting vision to removing offending gallbladders. It can also be used for general skin tightening. This is the alternative to the traditional facelift which required cutting and anesthesia and often produced scarring. Again, this is skin tightening and can work great for your skin but won’t lift jowls or saggy neck skin.

Improving your appearance as you age has never been easier.  Remember, in truth there is no such thing as a “non-surgical facelift.” However, marked improvements can be made in skin color, texture, wrinkles and volume loss. Plastic surgery may be just the option for you, except there might not be a need for a scalpel, should you choose to avoid that route.

Your posture, and how it can affect your mood

    October 16th, 2012

Did your mother ever shout at you, “Don’t slouch!” when you were sitting at the dinner table or walking across the room?

As annoying as it was to hear that, your mother wasn’t wrong. Maintaining good posture is important for your professional image, physical well-being and, oddly enough, your mood.

Did you know you can change your mood at any time simply by changing the way you sit and stand? Posture is one of the ways we express our feelings. You have likely noticed this while observing others and can tell if someone has low self-esteem or is nervous by the way she carries herself. Likewise, someone who is standing straight and tall while walking is likely very confident.

However, your posture isn’t only broadcasting your emotions and mindset to everyone else; it’s further affecting how you feel inside. If you’re feeling grouchy or sad, slouching will just make you feel worse. Straighten up and improve your day!

Try it now. You’re most likely sitting while reading this, so sit up nice and straight. Do you notice a difference in your mood and energy? Did you notice a marked improvement in your back and shoulders? They’re more relaxed now, no doubt.

So, if you’re feeling tired and moody, straighten yourself up a bit with better posture and take a deep breath. Your body will thank you for it and so will your future self. Scoliosis isn’t any fun, either!

Getting a Facelift? What You Should Know

    October 13th, 2012

Facelifts, or rhytidectomies, are popular cosmetic procedures that remove wrinkles, sagging and a general tired look from the face. Performed by a skillful cosmetic surgeon, While a facelift won’t make you look like your own daughter, if performed by a skilled surgeon, you’ll look years younger.

Steps to Getting a Perfect Facelift

Consult local cosmetic surgeons who have performed numerous facelift procedures. Make sure your surgeon speicalizes in cosmetic surgery for the face. A good plastic surgeon will explain the procedure, preparation, recovery, and potential complications. He will also discuss payment options with you and determine if you’re a good candidate for surgery. If you are, he’ll take your photograph and schedule surgery.

There’s some preparation on your part that you will need to make to have the best facelift experience.

Do you smoke? Time to quit. If you take blood thinning medications or supplements that could interfere with the healing process, you will need to stop taking them, but only under your doctor’s supervision. Discuss all medications and supplements with you plastic surgeon and family doctor before going in for any surgical procedure.

During surgery, your surgeon will comb back your hair and hold it back with a rubber band. Depending on what you and your plastic surgeon decide, you will go under a sedative and local anesthesia (applied to the areas where the incisions will be made) or under general anesthesia (most plastic surgeons prefer this method).

Your surgeons will make small incisions around your temples, ears and lower part of your scalp in an irregular fashion to reduce scarring. He will then create a skin flap and remove or move around fat and tissue under the skin. Your facial muscles will be raised and the skin will be fitted over your newly sculpted face. He will then remove the excess skin and close the incisions using glue or sutures.

Performed by a skilled surgeon, scarring will be minimal and well hidden; they may even appear to be natural lines around the face.

After your facelift procedure, your surgeon will remind you of how to perform self-care during recovery, including pain management, caring for surgical incisions, and when you can return to your normal routine. You will also schedule follow-up appointments to check on progress, manage any post-surgical complications that may arise, and take more photographs for comparison.

Though it might be a while before you see the amazing results of your facelift, like the great majority of patients, you will enjoy your more youthful face and smile when people assume you’re your daughter’s older sister.

Considering a Nose Job? Ask yourself these 5 key questions

    October 6th, 2012

Rhinoplasty, better known as a “nose job”, is performed to alter the size and/or shape of the nose and is one of the most commonly performed types of plastic surgery. An estimated 77,000 people got rhinoplasty in 2010; while some simply didn’t like the noses they were born with, others needed corrections to previous surgeries or accidents that damaged their noses.

Before opting for any kind of cosmetic surgery, there are some key questions you should ask yourself before going under the knife.

Am I healthy enough to get plastic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery has its risks just like any other type of surgical procedure. The risks are even greater in people who have preexisting health conditions. That is why it is wise to take your health into consideration before getting any type of cosmetic procedure. Your plastic surgeon may require that you receive clearance from your physician.

    Have I considered the alternatives?

There are a number of ways you can improve their appearance without getting rhinoplasty. Trying a new hairstyle or wearing makeup are two of the many ways to improve your looks without going under the knife. Makeup tricks can also change how your nose appears, and some cosmetic injectable fillers can alter the appearance of your nose temporarily without invasive surgery.

Am I doing this for myself or to please others?

Far too many women get cosmetic surgery to conform to society’s standard of beauty or to impress someone else. While a nose job, or any cosmetic surgery, can improve your appearance and life, it’s important to do it for the right reasons. Do it for yourself, not someone else.

    Can I afford this procedure?

Nose jobs can cost thousands of dollars, depending on the surgeon and the complexity of the procedure. Because most nose jobs are elective, they aren’t covered by insurance. While you may be able to setup a payment plan with your surgeon’s office, you may be expected to pay a significant amount up front. Note that many med spas and clinics accept credit cards, so that’s always an option as well.

Can I afford to take time out of work and school?

In the end, it’s worth it, but in the meantime, you will be sore after your nose job. Patients are expected to stay home for at least a week after surgery and are advised to avoid strenuous activity. Make sure you can afford to miss work or school during this time period and that you have help with daily tasks, such as child care and household chores.

Once all the above answers are “yes” make sure you choose a doctor who specializes in rhinoplasty. Ask your doctor of choice, how many they perform per year, look at their before and after photos and consider computer imaging to make sure you are both on the same page.

Have Sun Damaged Skin? 3 Questions to Ask Your Dermatology Provider

    October 3rd, 2012

Sun damaged skin occurs due to over-exposure to the sun without adequate protections from sunblock and clothing. A single sunburn can cause serious sun damage and increase risk factors for various skin conditions. Tanning is equally dangerous, as tans and freckles are evidence of sun damage.

If you have sun damage and want to improve the appearance of your skin, talk to your facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist about removing damaged skin cells, skin lightening treatments, and lasers.

More important are the health risks associated with sun damaged skin, the most common being skin cancer. If you have unusual skin lesions that don’t heal, pigmented spots that are rapidly growing, changing in shape, size or color please see a dermatologist to assess skin damage, evaluating your personal medical history to determine risk for developing skin cancers and melanoma. If you don’t know a good dermatologist, call Dr. Pearlman, we can suggest some very astute dermatologists who can help make sure you don’t have skin cancer.

Prevention measures should also be discussed with your skin care specialist. Though you may think you are cautious in terms of protecting your skin against burns and other sun damage, evidence of existing damage can be an indicator of skin protection failure. We can assist with best practices for your personal skin protection steps and best practices.

Remember, the sun is out there every day with it’s damaging rays, not just on weekends, at the beach, on the tennis court or golf course.

3 tips for eating to look younger

    October 1st, 2012

Wrinkles may look cute on baby elephants and puppies, but as a woman living in a world that thrives on youth, those fine lines and wrinkles are anything but cute.

Fortunately, in addition to a personalized skin care regimen as prescribed by your dermatology provider or skincare expert, a diet rich in citrus fruits, tomatoes, and whole wheat produce smoother looking skin and an overall younger looking appearance in those who tolerate these foods well.

Losing ellasticity like an over-used rubber band?

As women age, collagen (a protein that gives skin its natural elastin) production slows down causing skin sagging and wrinkling. Unfortunately, this slow down happens as early as age 20! An easy way to prevent this, in addition to speaking with your skincare expert, is to eat regular servings of citrus fruits. All citrus is loaded with vitamin C which, in addition to immune system boosting powers, also increases collagen production.

Sun worship left you looking like an old piece of leather?

You say “tomato,” and we shout, “lycopene!”, the strong antioxidant that acts as a powerful and natural sunscreen. The good news is that it’s easy to add extra tomatoes into your diet. Thick tomato sauces on pastas and pizzas in addition to raw tomato on salads and sandwiches add a quick and easy lycopene kick to your everyday meals. Eating more tomatoes has reduced skin inflammation and sunspots, creating an overall healthier and younger looking appearance in women just like you.

Ditch white for whole wheat and whole grain!

Citrus and tomatoes all add something to the skin, but it’s what whole wheat doesn’t do that makes it useful. Rather than being absorbed into the body quickly like white foods, whole wheat takes longer to digest. This means, unlike white food, whole wheat doesn’t turn into a burst of sugar, which created glycation and stiffens collagen. Once this happens, fine lines begin to appear like little sugar warning systems. Switch to whole wheat and/or whole grain pastas, rices, and bread to reduce the risk of aging before your time.

If you treat your body well, it will treat you well right back. If you’re noticing fine lines and wrinkles in your skin at a young age, look at your diet and see what you should add in and cut out to maintain a more youthful appearance.
